Ratio Calculator

Simplify ratios, find equivalent ratios, and scale ratios with multiple calculation modes.

What is a Ratio?

A ratio is a comparison between two or more numbers that shows their relative sizes. Ratios are written with a colon (:) between the numbers, such as 3:4, which means "3 to 4".

How to Simplify a Ratio

To simplify a ratio, divide both numbers by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). For example, the ratio 12:16 can be simplified by dividing both by 4, giving 3:4.

Ratio Calculation Modes

Simplify Ratio

Reduces a ratio to its simplest form using the GCD.

Example: 12:16 → 3:4

Find Equivalent

Finds the equivalent value when one part of the ratio changes.

Example: If 3:4 and A=6, then B=8

Scale Ratio

Multiplies both parts of the ratio by a scale factor.

Example: 3:4 × 2 = 6:8

Common Uses of Ratios

  • Cooking: Recipe ingredient proportions
  • Finance: Investment allocation, debt-to-income ratios
  • Construction: Mixing concrete, paint, or other materials
  • Maps: Scale ratios for distance
  • Photography: Aspect ratios (16:9, 4:3)
  • Chemistry: Chemical compound ratios

Ratio Formula

Simplified Ratio = A/GCD : B/GCD
Equivalent: If A:B = C:D, then A×D = B×C
Scale: (A×n):(B×n) where n is the scale factor
