Calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) based on your height and weight.
Understanding BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m², where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m² is their height in meters squared.
BMI is an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight category—underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity. However, BMI does not measure body fat directly, and it may not be accurate for athletes, the elderly, or pregnant women.
BMI Categories
For adults 20 years old and older, BMI is interpreted using standard weight status categories. These categories are the same for men and women of all body types and ages.
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is a useful indicator of health at a population level, it has significant limitations when assessing an individual because it doesn't account for several key factors:
- It doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition. A bodybuilder could have a high BMI due to muscle weight but be perfectly healthy.
- May overestimate body fat in athletes and muscular individuals.
- May underestimate body fat in older persons or those who have lost muscle.
- Not appropriate for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
- May vary across different ethnicities and age groups.
Because of these limitations, BMI should be used as one screening tool among others. For a complete health assessment, it's best to consult with a healthcare provider who can consider other factors like body composition, lifestyle, and family history.
BMI Calculation Formula
The formula for BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by the square of your height in meters:
BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]²
